- Driving License
For renting a car, you will need to have a full driving license. There is often a minimum age requirement (between 21 to 25 years old).
- Road Rules
Driving on Crete is on the right hand side of the road. By law, wearing seat belts is compulsory and motorbikes and scooter drivers must wear crash helmets.
The speed limit on the National highways is 90km per hour for cars, 70 km per hour for other vehicles. On country roads the speed limit is 70 km per hour and in towns and cities it is 50 km per hour.
Road signs follow normal European conventions and the places names are usually given in Latin and Greek alphabet.
Please observe parking restrictions as illegal parking can result in a ticket fine. Take care when driving, as many roads have potholes or uneven surfaces.
- Drinking and driving
Alcohol can have serious effects on judgment and driving ability. There are
severe penalties for driving after alcohol consumption.
- Mobile phones
It is forbidden by law to use a mobile phone while driving.
