| Sfakia. Also Known as 'Hora Sfakion' |
| Photo gallery | | | | | | | Destination Overview | Hora Sfakion is a historical village in a rocky region which is difficult to approach either by land or by sea. Due to its position it was never fully under Turkish control and many of the Cretan revolts centered on it.
Hora Sfakion, the capital of Sfakia region is a tiny port wedged between the mountains and the sea and nowadays is little more than a transit point for walkers ferried back from Agia Roumeli, who rejoin their coaches here. It has all the usual shops, tavernas and hotels. A plaque on the seafront marks the spot where about 10000 Allied soldiers were evacuated after the Battle of Crete during the Second World War. It is also worth visiting the small Venetian fortress on a hill called Kasteli build in 1526 as a part of a defensive system of towers and fortresses taken later by the Turks.
