| Georgioupoli. Visit the Lake of Kournas |
| Photo gallery | | | | | | | Destination Overview | The charming village of Georgioupolis is situated between Rethymnon and Chania and is considered to be one of the best resorts in Crete.
Georgioupolis with its long stretch of sandy beach has grown into a very popular holiday resort with a wide range of tavernas, shops and boutiques.
Georgioupolis always seems green and fresh because Almiros river flows, past on the north side of the village, providing irrigation for the thickets of eucalyptus and cypress trees which surround the village.
In the centre of the village is a large square shaded by massive old eucalyptus trees, where you can sit and enjoy delicious dishes and fresh fish in the tavernas around.
Within a small distance outside the village, a long row of hotels sits alongside the sweeping, almost 10 km long, pale fine sandy beach and crystal clear water.
A popular walk from Georgioupolis is to scenic Lake Kournas, 4km inland. It is famous as the only fresh water lake in Crete and haven for wild life.
Lake Kournas is the picture of tranquility, with its deep blue waters reflecting the surrounding hills and mountain slopes. You can also drive up to the lake, which is a favorite spot for locals’ barbeques at weekends. There is a small taverna with canoes and pedaloes for rent on the lake’s shore.
Like the nearby Almiros river, Lake Kournas is a good place for bird-watching as they are home to wild ducks, moorhens, freshwater turtles and other fauna.
