Keratokampos in Heraklio
Situated at a distance of approximately 73 km from Heraklio at the south east, Keratokambos is a long beach, pebbly in its major part with intervals of sandy areas.
At the western end of the beach, there is a small part of the beach, almost totally isolated.
The seabed is rocky, so the fans of snorkeling will find here their paradise.
The beach is not much organized to offer swimming or sea sport facilities, but the water is crystal clear and the beach quiet
enough without big crowds of visitors.
There are a few rooms to let available for accommodation in Crete in the small settlement at the beach as well as a few tavernas
where visitors may enjoy fresh fish and local dishes.
The coastline south of Heraklio and west of Ierapetra, is scenically spectacular and yet has managed to escape the attention of most tourists.
Many visitors may drive along the mountain roads pausing to take photographs but few are aware of the delightful seaside hamlets hidden between the folds in the mountains.
Keratokambos is one such hamlet, reached by a recently tarred road via the agricultural village of Chondras, allegedly inhabited since Minoan times.
This small fishing village is located on the southerly coast of Crete, approx. 70 km south of Heraklion.
Here you will find a single street and a tiny square with its own small church, where the ladies of the village can still be seen sitting in the shade knitting,
crocheting and no doubt discussing the minutiae of family life, as well as the folly of their summer visitors. To reach Keratokambos, you have to drive the National Road
through Vianos.
