Paleochora in Chania
Paleochora village is built on a small peninsula on the south west of Crete and is almost totally surrounded by water.
With the rugged south face of Lefka Ori sloping down to the coast behind it, Paleohora is in an undeniably attractive position and has become the busiest resort at
the west end of this coastline.
The Venetian fortress of Selino, which stood here on a hill called Kastela, was first built in 1279 and rebuilt in 1338.
The harbor is below the Venetian castle ruins on the west end of the peninsula in a distance of 1 km from the village centre.
There is a small island south west of the harbor's entrance. On both sides of the peninsula there is a beach area with hotels.
On the west side of the village, there is a superb sandy beach, spacious enough that it never seems crowded, with tamarisk trees for shade.
When it is too windy on this beach, for sunbathing, you can go through the village to another sheltered pebbly beach on the east side.
