Lassithi Plateau is a fertile plain 850 meters above sea level.
It is 12km from east to west and 6km from north to south and is surrounded by high peaks,
the highest of which is Spathi at 2.148 meters above sea level.
These peaks protected the inhabitants of the Plateau from attack.
There are two entrances to the plateau: one is from the side of Agios Nikolaos and the other is a pass into the Plateau coming from the Iraklion side through Kera.
The Seli Ambelos Pass at 900 meters is dotted with abandoned windmills on either side.
There is an impressive view of the Plateau from there.
The many little windmills, that someone can see in the general area of the Plateau were originally used to aid irrigation,
but today add a charming touch of whimsical rusticity to the area.
There are many worth visiting places in the general area of the Plateau.
Dikteo Andro is the cave in which, according to the legend, Dias, the greater of the ancient Greeks Gods was raised.
This magnificent cave is in Psychro.
What is more, it is a must to visit the monastery Vidiani, where there is a very interesting museum of nature.
The area near Agios Konstantinos and generally the Lassithi Plateau is
very suitable for rambling.
Therefore everyone who like strolling in the
natural environment will have a great time there.
Furthermore there are other activities that someone can do such as hiking or mountaineering.
